Step-by-Step MikroTik Admin Setup Guide

1

Connect to MikroTik Local Network

Connect your PC, smartphone, or tablet to the router network via Wi-Fi (SSID format: MikroTik-XXXXXX) or plug an Ethernet patch cable into any numbered LAN port (1 through 4). Avoid connecting to guest networks.

2

Launch Browser & Enter Gateway IP

Open Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. In the top URL address bar, enter http://192.168.88.1 or http://192.168.88.1 and press Enter.

3

Input Factory Admin Credentials

When prompted by the authentication dialog, enter default username admin and password (blank / no password). If these fail, check the printed serial label underneath your device or perform a hardware reset.

4

Update Admin Password & Configure Wi-Fi

Immediately navigate to Administration / System Settings and replace the default password with a cryptographically secure key. Proceed to Wireless Settings to configure WPA3-Personal security.

How to Factory Hard Reset a MikroTik Router

If you forgot your customized admin password or experience firmware corruption, you can restore factory defaults using the physical hardware reset procedure:

Important Notice: Configuration Erasure

A factory reset permanently erases all customized Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs), passwords, port forwarding rules, static DHCP reservations, and custom DNS settings. Your router will revert to factory defaults.

  1. Verify your MikroTik router is plugged in and the Power LED light is solid.
  2. Locate the recessed Reset pinhole button on the rear or bottom panel.
  3. Insert an unfolded paperclip or SIM-ejection tool and press the button firmly for 5s (reset) / 10s (CAPsMAN) / 15s (Netinstall).
  4. Watch the LED indicator lights blink, indicating the flash memory reset sequence has initiated.
  5. Release the button and allow 2 to 3 minutes for the system to complete its automated reboot cycle.
  6. Reconnect using factory default credentials: username admin and password (blank / no password).

Frequently Asked Technical Questions

All MikroTik RouterBOARD and RouterOS devices ship with default IP 192.168.88.1 assigned to the master bridge interface (Ethernet ports 2 through 5).

The default username is 'admin' and the password field is completely blank (empty). When connecting via WebFig or WinBox for the first time, RouterOS prompts you to assign a strong password.

WinBox is MikroTik's native desktop administration utility for Windows. It connects over TCP port 8291 or directly via Layer 2 MAC address, enabling you to manage devices even if the IP address is misconfigured.

Hold Reset button BEFORE applying power: Hold 5s until LED blinks (resets RouterOS configuration); hold 10s until LED solid (enables CAPsMAN wireless mode); hold 15s until LED turns off (launches Netinstall recovery mode).
